Paintball for Boobies

On Saturday I played in a charity paintball tournament for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure organization. My team, the Valkeries was the only all-female team. We were the only females playing, period.

Pink paint on purpose?

The Valkeries, Marie, Tanya, Kristy, me

Our coach, Loretta, I mean Lukas
I wish I could say we won, but we pretty much got our asses handed to us. But it was still a great time and the money went to a great cause, win or lose. The winning team, the Dog Sitters, had been out late the night before drinking. And they still won. Embarrasing.

We got beat by these guys?

The field is called Texas Paintball out in Jonestown just West of Cedar Park. No, that is NOT the same Jonestown where the Jonestown Massacre took place. That said, you do have to drive past End of the Trail Road, past Nameless Road, drive through a trailer park in which some of the "trailers" are literally rusted out storage sheds, before you get to the paint ball field. Rural Texas. What can I say?

The field itself is really nice. Several different playing fields as well and a areas in the woods to play. The Valkeries are going to be practicing, so next year, we'll be ready to redeem ourselves.

"Professor, What's Another Word for 'Pirate Treasure'?"

"Well, I think it's booty. Booty, booty, that's what it is." -The Beastie Boys

Updating this post with a pic of me wearing the shiny hot pants (and unfortunately, no, that's not my real hair).

Other than hemming and repairs, I haven't been doing a lot of sewing lately except for making booty shorts. I bought a legging pattern from Jalie that has been awesome. It makes a perfect pair of booty shorts in about an hour start to finish. I  have made some blue sparkly and Texas flag ones for the Rhinestone Cowgirls and a pair of mirror ball ones for me to wear during our game against the Holy Rollers. We won (87-23). Yeehaw!

I was going to wait to post this until all the photos from the game were available so I could add a photo of me in the shiny hot pants, but I am impatient so I'll just post this one of Kategory 5 blocking Lacey Bones.

I just bought some blue stretch sequin fabric and will attempt to make a pair out of that. I hear sequins are a bitch to sew. You have to remove the sequins from the seam line, sew the seam, and the sew each individual sequin back on. Yeesh. So maybe I won't be making a lot of sequin pairs, but they have been so much fun to make, I might start taking orders from the other teams.

The fabric arrived last night and I am a bit disappointed. The sequins are not even as they look in the photo above (from the Spandex World website). They are only attached at the top. They twist in places and don't lay flat so you can see the mesh underlayer. it doesn't look neat. I could add a layer of nude spandex under the mesh to hide anything from showing, but I don't think they will have the effect I want. I don't want janky looking sparkly shorts. Wah! Maybe I'll use this a a muslin and buy another yard of the higher quality (I hope) sequin mesh that has the sequins attached in three places so they can't turn and twist. The problem is that they don't seem to have royal blue in that variety. Hmm... what do you think? Turquoise? Maybe gold?

Recreating Old Photos and Paper Sculpture

I stumbled across the work of photographer Irina Werning on the Bleubird Vintage blog today. She has a project called "back to the future" where she recreates old photographs--having the subject(s) pose in the same place with the same clothes, props, and expressions. Check it out. Amazing!

In other Art news there is an interview on the Design Files blog with artist Anna-Wili Highfield who does the most amazing animal sculptures out of paper. Definitely worth a look-see.

Nothing Aesthetic to Report Today

Nothing aesthetic to report today. It's more of an aural day. Here's what's going through my head:

Corey farted last night and followed it up by saying Byyyyy Mennen like the 80s deoderant commercials. I laughed so hard I cried.

I watched Glee on Tuesday and have had Robin Thicke's "When I Get You Alone" stuck in my head ever since. He looks ridiculous in that video. He's much better looking with short hair. See?

Here's the Glee version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuahZj0vcmY

Looking forward to date night. We will probably go to Steiner Ranch Steakhouse for happy hour appetizers.Hopefully it's nice enough to sit on the patio. Happy Friday!

New Camera and Photos of Home

I bought myself a new camera from Costco with part of my year-end bonus. I'm attempting to learn to take better photographs and also to take some photos of my home. Here are a few shots I took of the living room. Not quite desire to inspire quality, but you've gotta start somewhere, right? I think the main problem is that the day wasn't bright enough to do the colors justice. They are all a bit off. Not as bright or saturated.

Carl's Junior now in Austin

Oh Santa Fe chicken sandwich, I remember you.

Oh fried zucchini, so good to see you again.

Oh Western Bacon six-dollar burger, Corey has missed you so.

My taste buds are happy (star). A taste of home.  Mmmmm.

Carl's Junior is now open on the Corner of Bee Caves and Old Walsh-Tarlton.
